Maharashtra Scholarship

Like most other states in India, Maharashtra provides many kinds of scholarships to its students. Most of the scholarships provided are for those students who come from SC/ST/OBC/Minority families. Further, these scholarships are mainly for those students whose family income falls below a certain benchmark. This allows the government to provide scholarships not only to the most deserving students but also to those who require the scholarships the most. You can apply for some of these scholarships through the National Scholarship Portal.

Maharashtra Scholarship Exam

Maharashtra Scholarship Exam

The Maharashtra State Council of Education (MSCE) provides a scholarship to students studying in the 5th and 8th grades. This scholarship is provided to a pre-determined number of top-ranking students from both classes every year.

In order to determine the candidates eligible for the scholarship, the Maharashtra State Council of Education conducts the scholarship exam every year for which willing students from all government recognized schools appear. The scholarship exam is usually held during the first half of the year.

Initially, only the top few students from certain schools were allowed to give the exam. However, all students studying in the 5th and 8th grade in government recognized schools are allowed to appear for the scholarship exam. The students in the 5th grade appear for the Pre-Upper Primary (PUP) Scholarship Exam; while those in the 8th grade appear for the Pre-Secondary Scholarship (PSS) Exam.

Exam Details

The scholarship exam can be answered in Marathi, Urdu, Hindi, Gujarati, English, Sindhi, Telugu and Kannada. It has 2 papers. The first paper has questions on the student’s 1st language and mathematics. The first language is the language the student is writing the paper in. There are 25 questions regarding the first language and 50 questions regarding mathematics.

The second paper has questions on the third language and an intelligence test. The third language is usually English. However, if the student is writing the paper in English, then the second paper will have questions on Marathi instead of English. There are 25 questions regarding the third language and 50 questions for the intelligence test in the second paper.

Thus, each paper has 75 questions worth a total of 150 marks and is for 90 minutes. Hence, each question is for 2 marks. The paper is given in an offline mode and students have to go to various centres in the state to give the exam. There is no negative marking for wrong answers.

The papers have a 30-40-30 level of difficulty. That is, 30% of the questions will be easy, 40% of the questions will be of moderate difficulty and 30% of the questions are of a higher level of difficulty. The syllabus for the exam can be found on the scholarship website. There are also sample papers to look at for reference.
