Education is regarded as a basic right. Everyone must get access to education so that they can learn and grow. Today, it is important to be educated so that we can get a good job and earn sufficient money to support our living. It has been found that the further you go ahead with your education, the more money you are likely to earn.

Even though education is given a lot of importance, many people cannot afford to pay for their or their children’s education. To tackle such problems, the government gives many scholarships to students who cannot afford to pay for their education.

Every state government provides scholarships to eligible students under various categories at various levels of education. Even the central government provides scholarships to students. These scholarships are provided to students from the primary level all the way to the doctorate level. Every year thousands of students get such scholarships that enable them to continue their education so that they can go further ahead in their studies.

In total, there are over a hundred scholarships offered by state and central governments. It becomes extremely difficult for students to keep track of all the scholarships offered. Finding the right scholarship becomes a difficult task, especially considering the fact that an aspirant would have to keep browsing through multiple sites to research the scholarships provided by the state and central governments.

In order to make it easier to find the right scholarship, the government has set up an online portal with all the information regarding the scholarships provided by the state and central governments. This saves students the time to search various sites and allows them to find all the information they require in one place.

This portal is the National Scholarship Portal and it has information about 118 scholarship schemes that are worth hundreds of crores. It shows scholarships provided by the central government, state government and government agencies like the Union Grants Commission. The National Scholarship Portal receives more than 10 million applications every year for aspiring candidates.

The National Scholarship Portal is one of the most notable scholarship portals established by the Indian government. It was launched by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The portal shows various scholarship schemes available to students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, Minorities and General categories.

The National Scholarship Portal functions as a one-stop destination where students can get all the help they need regarding their application for a scholarship. The National Scholarship Portal offers services such as student application, application receipt, scholarship processing, scholarship sanction and the allocation of scholarships to various eligible student applicants. The National Scholarship portal is undertaken as a Mission Mode Project under the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP). Mission Mode projects are projects under the National e-Governance Plan that are aimed at promoting electronic governance.

Vision and Mission of the National Scholarship Portal

The vision of the National Scholarship Portal is to provide a ‘SMART’ system, that is, a Simplified, Mission-oriented, Accountable, Responsive & Transparent system so that scholarship applications can be gathered in a faster, better and more efficient manner. This will also help in the quick and accurate distribution of scholarship funds to the beneficiaries without leakages.

Objectives of the National Scholarship Portal

The National Scholarship Portal functions as a common electronic portal to implement various scholarship schemes launched by the central government, state government and union territories across the nation. The objectives of the National Scholarship Portal include:

1. To ensure that scholarships are distributed to students on time without delays.

2. To provide a common portal to students for various central and state government scholarship schemes.

3. To create a transparent database with information of scholars and applicants.

4. To avoid duplication in processing of scholarship application (that could arise in offline applications when unsure students apply multiple times for the same scholarships).

5. To ensure harmonization of different scholarship norms & schemes.

6. To facilitate with the application of Direct Benefit Transfer.

Direct Benefit Transfer of DBT was launched by the Government of India to help facilitate in the transfer of subsidies. This helps transfer the subsidies given by the Indian government directly to the beneficiaries. It helps reduce leakages, duplicity and delay of funds when they are being transferred to the beneficiaries.

Benefits of the National Scholarship Portal

Since the National Scholarship Portal is wholly online and has information regarding multiple scholarships given by various branches of the Indian government, it has many benefits to the alternative process of offline applications. The benefits of the National Scholarship Portal include:

1. It is a simplified process for students.

All scholarship information is available in one place under a single umbrella. This saves the student from searching through many websites and saves their time and energy when they are looking for the right scholarship for themselves.

The National Scholarship Portal provides a single integrated application for all scholarships. Since the National Scholarship Portal is one website with all the information and facilities, students applying for scholarships do not need to search for or fill multiple forms while applying. The benefit of having it on one website is that students only have to fill in their details once. This is then saved on the portal and they are assigned a registration number. They can use this to fill in most forms.

This means that they do not have to fill all their details repeatedly or submit the same documents multiple times while applying for different scholarships which would have been the case if the applications were done offline.

2. More transparency

The National Scholarship Portal suggests schemes for which a student is eligible. Once a student is registered in the National Scholarship Portal, the portal looks at the data entered by the applicant and then uses it to suggest the scholarships that best benefit the student.

The application process through the National Scholarship Portal helps reduce duplicates to the furthest extent. Applicants have to fill in all their details and provide verifiable documents. This means that every application is checked on the National Scholarship Portal. If an applicant is applying for the second time, they would have to fill in the same details as the first time. The portal will then recognize this and stop the applicant from reapplying again for the same scholarship. This saves time during the screening process of the scholarship applications.

3. It helps in standardization

The National Scholarship Portal has data regarding institutions and courses at an all-India level. This means that all applicants can readily get the information they seek regarding the schools/colleges/universities they are applying to as well as the courses offered by them.

The fact that the National Scholarship Portal is online helps in the screening and processing of scholarships as well. The portal saves time during these processes as they are done online and hence are faster than when the screening and processing is done manually. Further, the fact that they are done online makes the scholarship processing procedure less prone to mistakes. It also removes subjectivity from the screening process.

4. Serves as a decision support system (DSS)

The National Scholarship Portal also serves as a decision support system for Ministries and departments. This is because it has up-to-date information that is made available to them whenever they need it. This provides them with all the accurate details they need when they are allocating scholarship funds to students.

5. It is a comprehensive MIS

The National Scholarship Portal is a comprehensive Management Information System (MIS). It helps provide in-depth data regarding an applicant. Further, it also helps applicants monitor every stage of the scholarship distribution process. That is, it helps the student keep track of their scholarship status right from the scholarship application stage to the time when the scholarship funds are distributed.

This is aimed to make scholarship registrations and applications easier for students since many of them may not have computers or laptops.

The ‘National Scholarship Portal Mobile App’ can be downloaded from Google Play Store. Further, the UMANG app that was launched in 2017, also has the NSP mobile app. Hence, those with the UMANG app on their mobile phones can apply for the NSP scholarships from there itself.

The v ‘National Scholarship Portal Mobile App’ has all the facilities as the ‘National Scholarship Portal’ website. Hence, students can register themselves, apply for scholarships and track the progress of their application through the ‘National Scholarship Portal Mobile App’.
