Description

The Welham Girls' School is a girls-only private boarding school situated in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. It was established in 1957 by a retired English Headmistress H.S. Oliphant, who was also the founder of Welham Boys School (1937). Due to lack of staff, the school enrolled another English woman named Grace Mary Linnel to manage the girls' school, who also became its Founder Principal.

The campus is spread over an area of around 12 acres adjacent to the boys' school. The School Motto is Aartha Shanti Phala Vidhya- Education aims to bring peace.

It was formerly known as Welham Girls' High School and started with only ten students, but the number has now grown to over 550. Similar to most British boarding schools, a house system is followed here, all of them are named after various species of aves found in the Doon valley viz.- Bulbuls, Flycatchers, Hoopoes, Orioles and Woodpeckers. The houses compete against each other throughout the year in activities like dancing, singing, debates etc. to get the annual best house award.

For extra-curricular activities, various Sports-scholarships are available for the students who excel in basketball, hockey, tennis etc. Students also can be a part of different clubs/societies like Quiz club, Nature club, Debate club, Photography club etc. The school also tries to encourage its students to become good Samaritans. Students frequently step forward to take part in charity events like the one organized by the Cheshire home for the disabled, and Raphael (a particular school for the visually impaired students).

Once a month, the school publishes two magazines- News & Views (in English) and Kshitij (in Hindi). Delphic, a Science/Technology oriented magazine, is published once every three months.

The Welham Girls' School, just like its male counterpart, has given the country a plethora of women who have made quite an impact in their respective fields viz.-

  • Meira Kumar
  • Brinda Karat
  • Priyanka Gandhi
  • Renuka Choudhary (all have served vital roles in the post-independence Indian political system)

Then in the field of music/drama/art, there is:
