St. Stephen School is a Roman Catholic school located in Chandigarh, India, founded by an Anglo-Indian Catholic Principal Harold Anthony Patrick Carver in the year 1982.
The school has an affiliation to the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) board. The school is located in three bungalows in sector eight; arrangements were later made in sectors nine and eleven until the land was allotted in Sector 45 by the UT Administration.
The school is housed in its four-story building with over 2400 students and 165 staff members. A student attending or an alumnus of the school is a "Stephenian", and there is an alumni association known as The Old Stephenian Society (TOSS).
History
The school's founder, Harold Carver, was previously a teacher in St. Joseph's College, Allahabad and St. John's High School, Chandigarh. The Christian Brothers ran it.
The school was started in April 1982, as a primary school from nursery to class five with a staff of twelve members. The school has an upgrade to senior secondary level in 1997 after the first batch of class ten passed in 1988.
Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, from the United Kingdom, gave a visit to the school in October 2010. It was organized by UKIERI that is the UK-India Education and Research Initiative.
Academics
At the 10th level, the subjects offered are Hindi/Punjabi, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Political Science, History, Geography, Economics, Art, English literature, English language, Computers, Mathematics, Business Studies, Accountancy and Physical Education.
The student strength per class is around 40–45. Every month there is an assessment, in which each student are discussed individually, is part of the assessment system. Here high performing students are encouraged with monthly awards of distinction and commendation. Low performing students are placed on the headmaster's list and are helped to do remedial work in their weak subjects.
