Harcourt Butler Technical University

History

In the 1920s there was a growing realization of the need for advancement in science and technology. Thus, the Indian Industrial Commission proposed to set up an institute in Kanpur. To boost entrepreneurship and accelerate industrial development, the Government Research Institute, Cawnpore was started in 1920. It was renamed as “Government Technological Institute” in 1921 and then in 1926 to “Harcourt Butler Technological Institute”. It was initially housed in the two rooms of what was called Bhoot Wali Kothi. The old building still stands at the northwest corner of the Company Bagh crossing, near Nawabganj. On 25 November 1921, the then governor of the United Provinces, Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler formally laid the foundation of the present main building. In 2016, the Government of Uttar Pradesh passed the HBTU Act which gave it the status of a university and renames it as Harcourt Butler Technical University.

Fees

For the academic year 2019-2020, the fees for the B.Tech. courses were Rs. 1,35,000 for the first year, Rs. 1,39,700 for the second year, Rs. 1,53,672 for the third year and Rs. 1,69,046 for the fourth year. The Master of Computer Application and M.Tech. courses for 2019-20 cost Rs. 1,20,000 for the first year Rs. 1,23,200 for the second year and Rs. 1,35,522 for the third year. The Ph.D. courses cost Rs. 65,000 for the first year, Rs. 57,200 for the second year and Rs. 62,921 for the third year.

Harcourt Butler Technical University has been consistently ranked as one of the best engineering institutes in not just Uttar Pradesh, but also in India. In 2018, the Outlook Magazine ranked it as the 25th best engineering college in India. In 2016, the Week ranked it 52nd nationally.

Placement

HBTU Placement cell is the official arbitrator for HBTU on-campus placement. The Placement Cell consists of the Placement Managers who primarily coordinate activities on two paths of campus placements – the company coordination and logistics – executed by the company coordinators and Student employability enhancement- looked after by the department placement coordinators. The placement cell has auditoriums, seminar rooms and necessary infrastructure to facilitate online and written screening tests to ensure that the placement process goes smoothly to the satisfaction of the companies visiting the campus. Companies like Tata Motors, IBM, Microsoft, Samsung, Hero Motocorp and Asian Paints recruit students from Harcourt Butler Technical University.
