Kanpur, the second-largest city in Uttar Pradesh, is famous for many reasons. It has prospered because of the presence of leather and textile industries, temples and markets. This has allowed the goods and service sector to grow and flourish in the city. When a city flourishes there is a demand for better facilities and amenities created. To meet these demands engineers of great expertise are required. These engineers can be produced only in the best of universities and institutes. This has led to the creation of some of the best engineering colleges in Uttar Pradesh. One such engineering institute is the Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTU). Here is everything you need to know about the institute.

History

In the 1920s there was a growing realization of the need for advancement in science and technology. Thus, the Indian Industrial Commission proposed to set up an institute in Kanpur. To boost entrepreneurship and accelerate industrial development, the Government Research Institute, Cawnpore was started in 1920. It was renamed as “Government Technological Institute” in 1921 and then in 1926 to “Harcourt Butler Technological Institute”. It was initially housed in the two rooms of what was called Bhoot Wali Kothi. The old building still stands at the northwest corner of the Company Bagh crossing, near Nawabganj. On 25 November 1921, the then governor of the United Provinces, Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler formally laid the foundation of the present main building. In 2016, the Government of Uttar Pradesh passed the HBTU Act which gave it the status of a university and renames it as Harcourt Butler Technical University.

The vision of the institute is “To achieve excellence in technical education, research and innovation.” It has focused its aim on accomplishing four missions-

Courses

The college offers twelve different courses in engineering and technology. It offers courses at the undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. levels. the various courses it offers include-

1. Civil Engineering-

  • The university offers a B.Tech. in civil engineering at the undergraduate level.
  • At the postgraduate level, it offers an M.Tech. in Environmental Science and Engineering and a part-time M.Tech. in Civil Engineering-Structural Engineering.

2. Computer Science and Engineering-

  •  The university offers a B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering and a B. Tech. in Information Technology at the undergraduate level.
  • At the postgraduate level, it offers a course on Master of Computer Application.
  • HBTU also offers a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering.

3. Electronics Engineering-

  • The university offers a B.Tech. in Electronics Engineering at the undergraduate level.
  • At the postgraduate level, it offers an M.Tech. in Electronics and Communication.

4. Electrical Engineering-

  • The university offers a B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering at the undergraduate level.
  • At the postgraduate level, it offers a part-time M.Tech. in Electrical Engineering.

5. Mechanical Engineering-

  • The university offers a B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering at the undergraduate level.
  • At the postgraduate level, it offers an M.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Computer-Aided Design as well as a part-time M.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering Design. It also offers a part-time M.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering-Industrial System Engineering.
  • HBTU also offers a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering specializing in various topics in the field.

6. Bio-Chemical Engineering-

  • The university offers a B. Tech. in Bio-Chemical Engineering at the undergraduate level.

7. Chemical Engineering-

  • The university offers a B. Tech. in Chemical Engineering at the undergraduate level.
  • At the postgraduate level, it offers a full-time as well as part-time M.Tech. Chemical Engineering.

8. Food Technology-

  • The university offers a B. Tech. in Chemical Technology with a specialization in Food Technology at the undergraduate level.
  • At the postgraduate level, it offers an M.Tech. in Chemical Technology with a specialization in Food Technology.
  • HBTU also offers a Ph.D. in Chemical Technology with a specialization in Food Technology.

9. Leather Technology-

  • The university offers a B. Tech. in Leather Technology at the undergraduate level.

10. Oil Technology-

  • The university offers a B. Tech. in Oil Technology at the undergraduate level.
  • At the postgraduate level, it offers three separate M.Tech. Chemical Technology with a specialization in Oil Technology depending on the qualifications of the students.

11. Paint Technology-

  • The university offers a B. Tech. in Chemical Technology with a specialization in Paint Technology at the undergraduate level.
  • At the postgraduate level, it offers an M.Tech. in Paint Technology.
  • HBTU also offers a Ph.D. in Chemical Technology with a specialization in Paint Technology.

12. Plastic Technology-

  • The university offers a B. Tech. in Chemical Technology with a specialization in Plastic Technology.
  • At the postgraduate level, it offers an M.Tech. in Plastic Technology.
  • HBTU also offers a Ph.D. in Chemical Technology with a specialization in Plastic Technology and a Ph.D. in Applied Chemistry.

Fees

For the academic year 2019-2020, the fees for the B.Tech. courses were Rs. 1,35,000 for the first year, Rs. 1,39,700 for the second year, Rs. 1,53,672 for the third year and Rs. 1,69,046 for the fourth year. The Master of Computer Application and M.Tech. courses for 2019-20 cost Rs. 1,20,000 for the first year Rs. 1,23,200 for the second year and Rs. 1,35,522 for the third year. The Ph.D. courses cost Rs. 65,000 for the first year, Rs. 57,200 for the second year and Rs. 62,921 for the third year.

Ranking

Harcourt Butler Technical University has been consistently ranked as one of the best engineering institutes in not just Uttar Pradesh, but also in India. In 2018, the Outlook Magazine ranked it as the 25th best engineering college in India. In 2016, the Week ranked it 52nd nationally.

HBTU undertakes various researches and other initiatives that help students develop. Some of these include-

  • A full-fledged Innovation and Incubation Centre which works under the control of the Dean, Incubation Hub.
  • To encourage entrepreneurship, startup, innovation and incubation, the Innovation and Incubation Centre organizes various motivational events from time to time.
  • A collaboration with IIT Kanpur for the implementation of the “National Initiative for Setting up of Design Innovation Centre”.
  • Faculty and students of the institute get assistance for entrepreneurships, startups and innovations.
  • Research papers written by those in HBTU are also published in journals and books as well as presented in conferences.

Placement

HBTU Placement cell is the official arbitrator for HBTU on-campus placement. The Placement Cell consists of the Placement Managers who primarily coordinate activities on two paths of campus placements – the company coordination and logistics – executed by the company coordinators and Student employability enhancement- looked after by the department placement coordinators. The placement cell has auditoriums, seminar rooms and necessary infrastructure to facilitate online and written screening tests to ensure that the placement process goes smoothly to the satisfaction of the companies visiting the campus. Companies like Tata Motors, IBM, Microsoft, Samsung, Hero Motocorp and Asian Paints recruit students from Harcourt Butler Technical University.
