OVERVIEW
Sardar Patel Vidyalaya (SPV) was established in 1957 by the Gujarat Education Society. It is located in the Lodhi estate of New Delhi. It is named after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India. It has currently enrolled over 1,600 students from nursery to class XII, who are guided by over 200 experienced faculty members. SPV is affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi.
CAMPUS AND INFRASTRUCTURE
The school is located on the Lodhi Road in New Delhi and is surrounded by the beautiful Lodhi Garden in its neighbourhood. The administrative block of the school views the compound flanked by beautiful flowers and more than 1000 trees on the campus. The school has well-ventilated classrooms and modern laboratories for science and computers, a well-stocked library which has over 20,000 books and subscriptions to 25 periodicals and newspapers. SPV also has an indoor games centre where all sorts of indoor sports are played. Badminton, table tennis, chess, judo, karate, gymnastics are a few of those, whereas the large playground hosts all sorts of outdoor sports and parades. The school canteen serves a variety of healthy and freshly cooked snacks and meals for the students. The school also owns a medical centre within the campus where regular medical check-ups of the students and teachers are thoroughly done and recorded.
SPV is affiliated with CBSE. For Classes XI and XII, all the three streams are available: Science, Commerce and Humanities. It is the only private school in India that uses Hindi as the medium of instruction at the primary level. However, English is a core subject throughout from Class I to XII.
SPV has a unique language policy. This policy allows both Hindi and English to be the medium of instruction at different stages. Students from Nursery to Class V use Hindi as their medium of instruction while students from Class VI to XII use English as their medium of instruction. The school aims at building a space where students are not just bilingual, but also equi-lingual. The trend doesn't stop here. From class VI-VIII, the school gives the students the option to learn any one of the four regional languages - Urdu, Tamil, Bengali and Gujarati, that represent the four directions of the country - North, South, East and West.
By this, students become familiar with new languages and culture. Attributes such as creativity, task commitment, critical thinking, technological knowledge and proficiency also teach them. Also, they attain conversational fluency.
SPORTS
Athletics, shot put, javelin throw, discus throw, high jump, long jump and triple jump, chess, table tennis and tennis are some of the major sports played in the school. The school has a separate indoor hall too and regularly participates in inter-school competitions at all levels.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
The school has clubs for the Middle School and Work Experience for the Senior School. These help the children to learn new skills in art, music, chess, theatre, clay modelling, crafts, Cooking and computer basics, Batik, gardening, poster making, painting, quiz and poetry appreciation. The students of high school also attend a weekly session for Work Experience, where sometimes the graduated students come as educators to share their knowledge of the skills they have acquired.
