La Martiniere School for Boys (LMB), Calcutta admitted its initial batch of fifty students in 1836. The school's unconventional name has been derived from its founder Major General Claude Martin (1735-1800). A French merchant-adventurer who created his fortune in Bharat beneath the powerful patronage of the Archipelago Company. Today, Martin's heritage is run beneath the supervising of the Bishop of Calcutta, who is the ex-officio president of the school's board of governors.
The sprawling 11-acre college is situated in south Calcutta on Loudon Street. It has a college building built in 1836, notable for its European architectural style, with the spherical Chapel, ringed by imposing Corinthian pillars, at the guts of it. The varsity field hosts spacious lecture rooms, a well-stocked library, facilities for all field games — hockey, cricket, and soccer — and swimming and athletics. Moreover, LMB is one among the few colleges where football and boxing are practised.
The school is connected with CISCE and prepares the students for the ICSE and ISC examinations. It is an English-medium school that has classes from nursery to the upper secondary level and it maintains a healthy teacher-student quantitative relation of 1:27.
LMB promotes extracurricular activities like debates, speech, and quiz, and sports like soccer, swimming, cricket, hockey, athletics, basketball, boxing, and table games ar inspired. The varsity additionally boasts a western-music orchestra and a pipes-and-drums band.
Students are inspired to participate in English language dramatics and debating clubs "LMB's forte." The format for admission into the Lower Nursery is posted on the School Notice Board/Website in the last week of November/first week of December. Applications for the admission to the Lower Nursery, along with relevant documents, are required to be dropped into the specially marked letterbox provided by the school
A list of candidates selected for interaction with the Principal and the Board of Governors are then posted on the School Notice Board at a later date.
Admission to all other classes is only against vacancies. Applications for these classes may be submitted to the Principal in March only.
