St Xavier’s College, established in 1860, is located in West Bengal, India. This autonomous college, is named after Father Francis Xavier, a 16th century Jesuit Saint, who traveled to India. Initially established as a private institution for higher education, the college received the title of becoming the first autonomous college in West Bengal, in 2006. Affiliated with the University of Calcutta, the institution offers students, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Arts & Science. In addition, the college is also known to offer various certified diploma courses for students from various fields.

History 

St Xavier’s College was founded and established on the 16th of January by an all-male Catholic religious order, called Jesuits. The Jesuits were formed by Saint Ignatius of Loyola. The college is named after Father Francis Xavier, the Spanish Jesuit Saint of the 16th century. The college was originally founded by Father Henry Depelchin. He played a major role in overseeing the groundwork to be laid down for the establishment of the college.

Located in Park Street, the heart of Kolkata and a melting pot of vivid cultures, culinary and social intellectuals. Father Depelchin bought the premise for Rs. 45,000.00. For this purpose, generous donations by the Anglo-Indians, with assistance from the Province of Belgium. There were 40 students in the first class of the college. Later, after two years of its inception, in 1862, the numbers of students gradually increased.

Academics

St Xavier’s College focuses on two departments, for undergraduate and postgraduate courses namely, Arts & Science. The subjects offered to students by the Arts department include English, Bengali, Political Science, Sociology, Animation and Multimedia, Mass Communication and Videography. The subjects offered by the Science department include,  Microbiology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Economics. 

Moreover, the college offers various masters programs in Commerce, Biotechnology, Physics, Microbiology & Education. To ensure efficient and smooth functioning of the course, batches during the day are scheduled for students pursuing the Arts & Science degrees.

Infrastructure at St Xavier’s College

Well equipped with state of art facilities and infrastructure St Xavier’s College ensures a quality experience for its students. A 4-storey building with classes spread over two buildings, the college has over 50 classrooms, six audio-visual rooms, and three computer laboratories, each having a capacity to accommodate over 70 students. 

Moreover, the college provides physics, chemistry and biotechnology laboratories to the students pursuing science to support their experimental activities. The Mass Communication and Videography departments have a separate video library that assists enthusiastic students to enhance their practical learning experience. 

Known for the College Central Library spread over two floors, St Xavier’s College ensures that all kinds of study materials and reference textbooks of different subjects are available here. In addition, numerous periodicals from diverse fields are also available for the students. The library also gives access to scientific journals and archives, where famous fictional and non-fictional books are available.

Equipped with various sound and lighting systems, the college auditorium can seat 800 people. Most programs and seminars take place in the auditorium. The college also provides football and basketball courts behind the main college building for students interested in pursuing sports. The students of the college and the students of St Xavier’s Collegiate School share the football and basketball courts.

College Clubs & Communities

Besides educational affairs, St Xavier’s College also supports various social causes such as environmental issues, youth welfare, women’s welfare, and poverty reduction. The college student clubs acts as catalysts in organizing activities aimed at addressing a social cause. The student clubs enable students to gain exposure, inculcate leadership qualities and boost the innovative spark.

Extracurricular Activities

St Xavier’s College, organizes various events and festivals. Each event attracts audiences in large numbers from across the state.

Xavotsav

One of the popular cultural festivals, held annually, at the college, during the month of January. Participation from colleges is on an invitation basis only. Most colleges across Kolkata receive an invitation to participate in events such as Band Performances, Classical Dances, Singing, etc. The Student Union Body organizes Xavotsav along with the college alumni. It is the perfect opportunity to showcase talent amidst colleges from across the state.

Inertia

The international marketing festival takes place in February & March, every year. Students can showcase their marketing skills and talent on a national platform through the festival. Events include Ambush Marketing, Ad Spoof, Brand Manager, International Trade and Crisis Management. Both Undergraduate, as well as post-graduate students from all across the country, participate in the program every year.

Insignia

The management festival of St Xavier’s College, organized in mid-February, every year. This platform allows the top ten commerce colleges of India to participate and compete against each other in events that test their management and business acumen. Events include Human Resource Management, Best Manager, Business Quiz, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship Development, etc.

Spectrum

Organized by the Department of Physics, Spectrum is a 2 day event. Organizing events like debates, quizzes, drama, lectures by Nobel laureates is its forte. 

Vividha

The Hindi Literary Society of St Xavier’s College, Kolkata organizes Vividha to promote the usage of Hindi across the campus and familiarize the youth with the language. To achieve the objective, it conducts events like Drama Competition, Extempore, Elocution, etc focused on the usage of Hindi.

Xavullash

Organized by the Bengali Literary Society (BLS) at the college, the event Xavullash comprises events such as Debate, Extempore, Elocution, etc. in Bengali to promote and familiarize people with the use of the language Bengali.

The St Xavier’s College of Kolkata, takes immense pride in showcasing the notable alumni of their college who have successfully achieved a milestone in their respective fields.

N.C.C as being held is only for Senior Class, why are the students from Junior class not given this Opportunity?
