The members of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) founded Saint Mary’s School, Mumbai in 1864. They are a Roman Catholic religious order founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540. It started as a Catholic school of education and a military orphanage, and later expanded to the Catholic people in general. Lord Linlithgow (the Viceroy of India from 1936 to 1943) laid the foundation stone for the construction of the senior school building.

The school initially granted the degree/diploma of a Cambridge University O level of education. Today, it gives the I.C.S.E. (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) qualification.

Infrastructure

The school has four Gothic-style buildings and is classified into Senior School (grade 5 and above) and Junior School (grade 4 and below). St. Mary’s has world-class infrastructure that provides all facilities to promote the all-round development of the students. It has well-equipped and smart classrooms, a spacious auditorium, a library, computer and science laboratories and a vast playground. The school also avails transport facilities. Although the school provides many great facilities, it does not provide hostel facilities.

Academic Curriculum

The course of school studies is designed to prepare students for the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education Examination that is conducted by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi. The curriculum at St. Mary’s is such that an annual session is divided into three phases. The school holds continuous examinations and evaluations throughout these phases, and promote students promoted to the next grade on the aggregate result of their performances. 

The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (I.C.S.E.) is an examination equivalent to the S.S.C. and students who pass it are awarded certificates and are eligible for admission to the H.S.C. or I.S.C. study. The students of the senior category (XI-XII) appear for the I.S.C. examination. The faculty at St. Mary’s are well qualified and skilled and make sure that they take good care of students.

Extracurricular Activities

The school conducts many activities and events, other than academics, throughout the year. These activities teach and enhance creativity, communication, critical thinking, and leadership skills in the students. The school has various clubs such as photography club, robotics classes, literary club, speech, drama & music clubs and many more. These clubs organise competitions throughout the year for debates, elocutions, essays, craft making, painting, music, dance, dramatics and many more. The students participate not only in intra school competitions but also in the state and national level competitions and bring glory to the school. The school also has Scout troops.

Sports Activities

St. Mary believes that the overall development of a child requires the exercise of the body as much as of the brain. It ensures that the students’ involvement in sports and athletics continues and that the school always provides a sportive and enthusiastic environment. Students here participate in all sorts of sports events and also represent the school in inter-school competitions at the city, state, and national levels. The school also conducts the Annual Sports Day every year.

In 2018, the Education World’s Survey ranked the school 3rd in the category of ‘Day School for Boys’.
