What is the full form of ICSE?
The full form of ICSE is Indian Certificate of Secondary Education, which is the certificate that is awarded to students who are studying in schools that are affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination(CISCE) after passing their class 10th Examinations.
ICSE Examinations are class 10th board examinations conducted by CISCE in compliance with the “New Education Policy” of 1986.
Who can appear for ICSE Examinations?
Under the current policies of CISCE, only class 10th students who are attending a full-time course at any of the CISCE affiliated schools can appear for ICSE Examinations. Home-schooled students aren’t allowed to appear for ICSE Examinations under normal circumstances.
Students from any caste, creed, religion, economic background, sect, gender, tribe or race can appear for these examinations.
A student appearing for ICSE Exams must meet the minimum attendance criteria of 75% during the school year.

- CBSE stands for Central Board for Secondary Education, which is an educational body controlled by the Government of India while ICSE is governed by CISCE, which is a private organisation.
- ICSE is older than CBSE.
- The number of schools affiliated to CBSE in India is many times more than the number of schools affiliated to ICSE.
- ICSE has a much more detailed and comprehensive syllabus than CBSE.
- English is considered to be of much more importance in ICSE than CBSE.
Structure of ICSE
Subjects in ICSE are divided into three groups
Group 1:-
All the subjects in group 1 are compulsory.
These subjects are-

- History, Civics and Geography
- Any Indian Language of the student’s choice
20% of the total marks are given for internal assessment by the school for the subjects in group 1.
Group 2:-
Students are free to choose any two subjects from the following list.
- Mathematics
- Science
- Environmental Science
- Agriculture Science
- Computer Science
- Commercial Studies
- Technical Drawing
- Economics
- Any Modern Foreign Language
- Any Classical Language.
20% of the total marks are given for internal assessment by the school for the subjects in group 2.
Group 3:-
Students are free to choose any two subjects from the following list.
- Computer Applications
- Economic Applications
- Commercial Applications
- Home Science
- Art, Performing Arts
- Cookery
- Fashion Designing
- Physical Education
- Yoga
- Technical Drawing Applications.
50% of the total marks are given for internal assessment by the school for the subjects in this group.
