History:

The origin of IITs in India is marked by the report submitted by a high powered committee of the Government of India headed by Sir Nalini Ranjan Sarkar. The committee recommended the establishment of four higher institutes of technology in India. IIT Kharagpur was the first institute to be set up in India followed by IIT Bombay.

IIT Bombay was the first engineering institute set up with foreign assistance by UNESCO in the form of Roubles from the then Soviet Union. The institute was set up in 1958 with the first batch of around 100 students.

Functioning:

IIT Bombay is governed by a Board of Governors along with its chairman. The chairman is nominated by the President of India. The Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Government of India has established the IIT Council to guide all the IITs in India. The Director is the executive head of the institute and heads the Senate which is an authority on all matters related to academics. All the professors of the institute including a few nominated members are a part of the senate.

Admission process:

  • Admission to 4 and 5-year undergraduate programmes is done through the JEE Exam.
  • The admission to B.Des. programmes are done through the UCEED.
  • Applications for PhD Programme are accepted round the year. These applications are processed twice, i.e., once during the Autumn Semester and other during the spring semester. These applicants can also apply through the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship.
  • Admission to 2 years M.Sc. Programme and M.Sc. and PhD Dual Degree Programme are done through JAM.
  • Admission to some of the postgraduate programmes is done through GATE examination.

The campus of IIT Bombay is rich in terms of both- physical beauty and location. Physical beauty in the sense that the campus is surrounded by a green cover properly maintained from time to time. These hostels allow private caterers to serve in their messes and furniture like a bed, chair, study table, cupboard etc. are provided by the hostel authorities. However, the students need to arrange their bucket, mattresses, bedsheets, pillows etc. With this, the added advantage comes in the form of the geographical location of the campus.
