Overview

IIM Bangalore(IIMB) is third oldest IIM of the country. Today, it serves as one of the most eminent institutions of the world. Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) is a public business school, located in Bangalore, Karnataka. Established in 1973 as the third IIM in the country after IIM Calcutta being the first and IIM Ahmedabad being the second. Recognized as an ‘Institute of National Importance’, it is also nicknamed as ‘The Place to B’. It is the best MBA college in Bangalore.

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) known for management education and research in India, offer postgraduate, doctoral and executive education programmes, but also inculcate in students the values of education and culture. Established by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who served as the first Prime Minister of independent India, based on the recommendations of the Planning Commission. Recognized as institutions of national importance after the passage of Indian Institutes of Management Act in 2017, IIMs have the power and authority to make autonomous decisions throughout the functioning of the institutes. 

History of IIM Bangalore

After the establishment of IIM Calcutta & IIM Ahmedabad, to cater to the rising demand for graduates in the field of management, Ravi J. Matthai, in 1972, commended raising two more IIMs. The first two IIMs are private sector-oriented, while the new IIMs are public sector-oriented institutes. The Government of Karnataka offered 100 acres of land free of cost and a financial handout of ₹3 million for setting up the institute.

Inaugurated by Indira Gandhi on 28 October 1973, at St. Joseph’s College of Commerce, rented on the Langford Road set up as the initial campus. In 1983, the new campus shifted to Bannerghatta Road Campus in South Bangalore. T. A. Pai was the first chairman and N. S. Ramaswamy was the director of IIM Bangalore.

Motto: Tejasvi nāvadhītamastu. The motto of IIMB is based on the Sanskrit phrase तेजस्वि नावधीतमस्तु (pronounced as tejasvi nāvadhītamastu). It is an excerpt from the Shanti Mantra. The motto means to ‘Let our study be enlightening’.

Campus

The current campus is located at Bannerghatta Road in Bangalore and designed by architect B. V. Doshi along with the partnership of Joseph Allen Stein and Jai Rattan Bhalla. The campus occupies an area of over 100-acres in South Bangalore. IIM Bangalore is planning to build its second campus on the suburbs of the city near Jigani in Anekal.

Known for the stone architecture and lush woods, the basic idea of the design of the institute was gardens and temples. The campus exhibits sustainable architecture as well as an eco-friendly campus design with locally available granite being the primary building material. Currently, the blocks are sequenced from A to P where classes, faculty offices and other administrative buildings are located.

A four-floored complex spaced in a 55,000 square feet area, the IIM library includes more than 235,000 documents and books and over 85,000 journals for reference. It has subscribed to 27 newspapers and more than 200 newsletters. The institute has more than 600 PCs and workstations.

IIMB has 16 hostel blocks and different areas for soccer, cricket, tennis, basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and pool, along with an integrated indoor sports complex with a swimming pool in it.

IIM Bangalore, Auditorium

The Auditorium is located inside the academic block. It can accommodate 500 people and hosts various events, functions and guest lectures held at the institute. Apart from these, there is also an executive block and executive accommodation at the Management Development Centre. The institute is WiFi enabled and has internet connectivity all across.

To encourage entrepreneurial activities at IIMB, Nadathur S. Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL) was established. in 2002 It is a ground for industry experts, mentors, researchers, and academicians who help aspiring entrepreneurs to start their ventures. As of April 2020, NSRCEL has helped more than 240 startups to grow. Their combined value is nearly 1.5 Billion dollars. This has helped in creating more than 5400 jobs.

Courses Offered

IIM Bangalore offers six degree-granting programmes: A full-time doctoral programme, 3 full-time MBA programmes, a weekend executive MBA programme, and a full-time programme on public policy.

MBA Programmes:

MBA at IIM Bangalore is offered in three formats – 2 year full-time programme (PGP), a 1 year full-time programme (EPGP) and the 2 year executive programme (PGPEM). 

Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP):

Formerly known as the PGDM programme of the institute, the program is presently known as the two years full-time MBA programme of IIMB. This programme in MBA stands amongst the top 20 Masters in Management Programmes of the world. Admissions to this programme are through CAT(Common Admission Test). The expected total fee for the programme is ₹ 18.70 Lakh.

Executive Post Graduate Program in Management (EPGP):

EPGP is an intensive one-year full-time residential MBA programme functioning specifically for professionals with remarkable performances and 5-12 years of work experience in a wide range of industries. It started recently, a decade ago. The program is for the students who have credible work experience and are exposed to a compulsory international term. EPGP provides the same opportunities of knowledge, learning and skill-acquiring to the students as given in the two-year MBA program.

The subjects for elective as well as the grading system resembles that of the MBA program. It has pushed the institute to the position of a top 30 global B-school, whereas the programme itself is ranked 27th among the top global full-time MBA programmes of the world. The admissions to this programme are based on the GMAT(Graduate Management Admission Test). The expected fee for the programme is ₹ 21.70 Lakh.

Executive MBA Programme (part-time) : 

The Post Graduate Programme in Enterprise Management (PGPEM) is for working professionals interested in business education, on a part-time basis over the weekends. Initiated in 1988, the senior executives have a minimum of four years of work experience after graduation are also eligible to apply for the programme.

Doctoral Programme :

The Doctoral programme promotes interdisciplinary research in all areas of business management and public policy, including Decision Sciences, Economics & Social Sciences, Entrepreneurship, Finance & Accounting, Information Systems, Marketing, Organizational Behaviour & Human Resources Management, Production & Operations Management, Public Policy, Strategy.

International Collaborations and Student exchange:

IIM Bangalore has a wide network of partner B-schools across the globe which facilitates it to conduct student exchange programmes. During the 5th term of the two-year MBA program, students can opt for the student exchange. More than 100 students from IIM Bangalore depart to foreign institutes all over the planet and the same number of students from various B-schools arrive in Bangalore. Doctoral exchange is offered at the National University of Singapore, University of Cologne and other schools in the United States. Scholarships are provided by partner schools or by government grants such as German Academic Exchange Service.

International Immersion Programme:

IIM Bangalore organizes an international immersion programme for the one year MBA candidates in the fourth term, which is a two-week programme that gives the students a chance to take courses in some of the leading universities in Asia and Europe. 

Global Network for Advanced Management:

The Global Network for Advanced Management started in 2012. This is the only Indian management school to be a member of the Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM). It includes 30 leading business schools from all over the world. The GNAM allows students of the partner schools access to select courses offered by other partner schools by the use of digital technology as well as it offers the opportunity to the faculty members to teach an international class full of students from the member schools.

Clubs & Societies 

Student Clubs & Societies

A large number of student-run clubs and societies are present at IIM Bangalore. Divided into clubs, mini clubs, chapters and societies they are managed by students and looked upon by the Student Affairs Council.

The councils are:

  1. Students Affairs Council: It is the primary body which looks upon all the aspects of student life including other clubs and societies.
  2. Academic Council: It is an elected body that facilitates the management of the academic system at IIM Bangalore. The Council acts as an interface between students and faculty. It also manages the elective bidding process for courses by assessing the academic requirements of the student community.
  3. Placement Committee: Over 100 companies from all across the globe visit the institute every year for summer as well as final placements. Placements are administered by the Career Development Services and facilitated by the Placement Committee.

Extracurricular Activities

IIM Bangalore organises a good number of events throughout the year. They are:

Eximius

The annual entrepreneurship summit hosted by IIM Bangalore, Eximius is a 3 day event. It emphasizes entrepreneurship and the generation of new business ideas. 

Unmaad

Unmaad is the annual cultural festival of IIM Bangalore, which is a three-day event that invites participants from all across the country. The event hosts drama, music performances, dance performances, quizzes, debates, street plays, professional concerts and a fashion show. 

Vista at IIM Bangalore

Vista is an annual international business summit at IIM Bangalore, which is a three-day event and assembles leaders from the fields of marketing, finance, operations, human resources, consulting and social work. The platform provides students with opportunities to learn from the business professionals through events, competitions and case studies. The event includes guest speaker sessions where successful leaders address the students.

Yamini

A music festival hosted at IIM Bangalore is organized by the Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Among Youth (SPICMACAY).

IIMBUE

IIMB Leadership Conclave: IIMB Leadership Conclave is an annual event at IIMB that invites globally renowned thinkers and achievers with IIMB alumni over a weekend of interesting discussions 

Women Leadership Summit

An annual summit organized by IIM Bangalore, to inculcate gender-inclusive mind-sets among students, entrepreneurs, and corporate. The one-day event in January helps create awareness through talks and workshops with prominent personalities. 

Journal- IIMB Management Review (IMR)

IIMB Management Review (IMR) a quarterly journal brought out by IIM Bangalore, addresses management practitioners, researchers and academics. IMR focuses on involvement in practices, concepts and ideas in the field of management.

Scholarships at IIM Bangalore

IIMB offers various scholarship to PGP students:

Aditya Birla Scholarship

A merit-based scholarship of INR 1.75 lakh offered to students of both the years of the PGP.

OPJEMS Scholarship 

A merit-based scholarship of INR 1.50 lakh given by the OP Jindal Group to one eligible student of each academic year.

Societe Generale Global Solution Centre India Scholarship 

This scholarship that covers tuition expenses in full.

IIMB PGP Alumni First Batch (1976) Scholarship

This scholarship is for the differently-abled female students. However, in case of no differently-abled female student in the batch, the scholarship may be given to a differently-abled male student. The scholarship includes an amount of INR 50,000, a medallion and a certificate.

Apart from the above-mentioned scholarships, the institute provides financial assistance to all the students of PGP whose annual household income is below INR 4,50,000. 

Placements at IIM Bangalore

The placement session of IIM Bangalore for 2020 came out with 100% placement results. 428 students appeared for the placement receiving 518 offers with placement within three days of interviews. Similar results were visible for placement session for 2019 with 100% placement . 411 students received 488 offers from several reputed companies within two days of the interview. A notable number of companies visit the campus covering several areas such as Consulting, Marketing, Banking & Finance sector, General Management, Product Management, Supply Chain Management, and Human Resource Management. 

Some of the renowned recruiters of that visit the campus are EXL, Boston Consulting Group, Deloitte, Amazon, AT Kearney, The Boston Consulting Group, Bain & Co., Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, McKinsey & Company, Adani Group, Anheuser-Busch InBev, EXL Services, Microsoft and Oliver Wyman.

The alumni of IIM Bangalore is presently serving not only in the country, but the world over many prestigious positions. IIMB Alumni Association (IIMBAA) organises meet-ups with the Alumni network and keeps them involved with the business school. Anusmaran is an annual meetup of IIM Alumni conducted in multiple cities across the world. Some of the eminent personalities from the alumni include academicians such as Aswath Damodaran and Raghavendra Rau, author Karan Bajaj and filmmaker Nila Madhab Panda. The Chairman of ISRO, K. Radhakrishnan and businessmen like Ravi Subramanian and Sameer Suneja are also a part of the prestigious alumni of IIM Bangalore.

Mentorship

IIM Bangalore mentored IIM Trichy during its period of establishment in 2011. It is presently mentoring IIM Visakhapatnam since its establishment in 2015. 

Rankings

In 2018, IIM Bangalore became the first IIM to offer an MBA degree to the graduates of the Post Graduate Programme in Management. The part-time Weekend Executive MBA programme (PGPEM) ranked the 1st position in India. This institute ranked 12th in the Asia-pacific region by the QS Executive MBA Rankings in 2019. In 2019, IIMB ranked 1st among management schools by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). In 2019, QS University Rankings ranked IIMB as the top institute in India in the Business and Management Studies category.

Candidate shortlisting is based on the information provided (on the recommendation of the respective areas). They are based on numerous parameters, some of which are their performance in either of CAT, GMAT, GRE, GATE, JRF (NET) score or IIMB Test (as applicable), their past academic performance, work experience, the area-specific written test and/ or interview performance etc..

What are the expectations from the Doctoral Program students?

They are expected to complete course work, pass a comprehensive exam, and then do publication-quality research of an international standard.

How much time does it take to complete the Doctoral Program?

Students are provided with 5 years to complete the program.

Do the Doctoral Program students need to teach?

No, they need not teach. However, the students are required to work closely with professors as teaching assistants and research assistants.

How many students are selected annually?

The selection is area-specific and entirely based upon the performance of the candidates.
