Timeline
Establishment
- In 1858 Rev. Fr. William Gleeson, a young Irish priest, came to Lucknow and sold the land at Golaganj of the former mission.
- From the sale proceeds and local donations, Rev. Fr. William bought a piece of land at the present day Hazratganj, which was wilderness back then.
- In 1860, Rev. Fr. William Gleeson built a beautiful church, and he dedicated it to St. Joseph.
- In 1860, Rev. Fr. William built a boundary wall, and in 1862 he made a priest’s house.
- In 1862, Rev. Fr. William handed over the charge to Rev. Fr. O.F.M. Cap of Turin.
- On 10th May 1862, Bishop Anastasius Hartmann blessed this church.
- In 1885, Very Rev. Fr. Conrad De Vito, O.F.M. Cap of Tossignano on the veranda of the priest’s house, started teaching two boys named Issac and Charles Claudius, realising the importance of education in the society back then.
- Later, seeing the need for education, he started St. Francis School and Orphanage.
- In 1890, he started the St. Francis Boarding and Day school, which is the present-day location for Cathedral School.
- In 1908, Bishop of Allahabad Rt. Rev. Petronius Gramigna O.F.M. Cap purchased the land of St. Francis School from Rt. Rev. Fr. Petronius Gramigna O.F.M Cao who was the Bishop of Allahabad.
Development
- In 1918, St. Francis got moved to its present-day location- 8, Shahnajaf Road, Lucknow.
- St. Joseph’s Orphanage and St. Joseph’s High School continued to operate at the same place.
- In 1942, Very Rev.Fr. Conrad De Vito, O.F.M. Cap was appointed as the Parish Priest of St. Joseph’s Church Lucknow.
- In 1947, Very Rev.Fr. Conrad De Vito, O.F.M. Cap was consecrated as the First Bishop of the new Diocese of Lucknow. Later in the year 1950 seeing the crucial need for education, he started Anand Bhawan School and Institute if the Maids of the poor in the city of Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh.
- On 8th July 1950, St. Joseph’s Private day School started with Rev. Fr. Edward Albertazzi O.F.M. Cap as the Founder Principal. It began with 60 children and four classrooms.
- On 16th July 1950, St. Joseph’s Private Day School got renamed as Cathedral School with Principal Very Rev. Fr. Clement Bondioli, O.F.M. Cap. The school had around ten classrooms, 150 children, and aimed towards providing education and well-being of children.
