Origin

When we were colonized, the English required an institute for the learning and education of their people while in India. It is the irony of this ‘need’ that has led to the establishment of some of the best-known institutes in the country. One such establishment took place in the year 1822 at the Curzon bridge in Allahabad. This was the ‘Boys High school’ in Allahabad which became one of the first-ever co-ed institutes in India. Here, students from both the genders came together to learn, and the Syllabus was in-sync with the curriculum of the time. However, today, it admits only boys.

Interestingly, students learn various foreign languages like Greek, Latin, and French at the ‘Boys High School’ Allahabad. Also, various existing records reveal impressive hammock-like buildings for boys and girls.

Establishment

The English, wanted to help advance the education system in Allahabad since this city required a new lease for education and awareness. The masses were happy with initiative to build a new school. It was suggested that the learning would be done according to the doctrines of the Church of England. This was especially essential for the children of Anglo-Indian and European descent. However, it was maintained from the very start that the Articles of Association made the institute available for the students from all communities and backgrounds.

Thus, they laid the first foundations, and the government gave grants for the establishment and development of the High School. At that time, the entire infrastructure comprised of boarding facilities, Principle’s Bungalow, and another building for the member of the staff. The institute was affiliated to the University of Allahabad from 1898 to 1914. It also commenced the Cambridge overseas school certificate examinations in the year 1915. Presently, the Allahabad High School Society manages the institute.
